Activities
Due to its network character
the activities of ENSSEE are various. Mostly, the network concentrates on
projects trying to develop and promote the sector of sports and sport sciences
on a European (political) level. Areas include Physical Education, Sport
Coaching, Health & Fitness, Sport Management, Sport Employment and e-learning in
sport.
European Sport Education
Information Platform - SOPHELIA
The European Sport
Education Information Platform SOPHELIA is ENSSEE's working platform and bundles
up to date information about sport education in Europe to its stakeholders.
The idea to create an
European Sport Education Information Platform was developed by the sport related
Thematic Network Project AEHESIS 'Aligning a European Higher Educational
Structure In Sport Science' that was funded between 2003 and 2007 by the
SOKRATES Programme of the European Commission and coordinated by the Institute
of European Sport Development & Leisure Studies at the German Sport University
Cologne on behalf of the European Network of Sport Science, Education &
Employment - ENSSEE.
The Greek name of the Information Platform, Sophelia, was chosen in accordance
with the existing European education programmes and originates from the two
words Sophia (wisdom) and Ophelia (use) that already refer to the aim of the
platform to bundle information about sport education in Europe and to distribute
it properly to its stakeholders.

European Sport Workforce
Development Alliance
A new step in the Education
and Training policy in Europe was initiated by the European Council and the
European Commission at the Maastricht conference in December 2004. In line with
the Copenhagen declaration (2002) on VET, it has been decided to support the
creation of a "European Qualification Framework" (EQF). A first document called
"Towards a European Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning" was approved
in July 2005 and then submitted to a Consultation Process open until the end of
December 2005.
In the light of that, the
EOSE Board has taken the initiative to arrange a meeting in December 2005 in
Brussels with the key stakeholders of the European Sports Sector to coordinate
the contribution of the Sports sector to the EQF consultation and to form a
permanent group to provide the strategic guidance towards developing,
implementing and evaluating a European Sport Workforce Development Plan with
short, medium and long term goals.
The strategic committee
called “European Sport Workforce Development Alliance” was created to bring
together the major network organisations working in the sport sector to share
and discuss issues around the development of the European Sport Workforce.

information can be found
here.
ENSSEE Forum
In order to gather
stakeholders dedicated to Sport Education in Europe, ENSSEE
regularly organises a biennial Forum
where projects and initiatives developing the sector are presented.
Further information can be found here.
Recent Projects
The following projects are /
were run
by, on behalf or with the support and participation of ENSSEE:
Based on the outcomes of the former
“Vocasport” project that was funded by the European Commission and run in 2004
under the scientific direction of the European Observatoire of Sports and
Employment (EOSE), the EQF-Sports Project is part of a process lasting since
more than ten years intending to link all individual stakeholders of the sport
sector in the field of vocational education and training.
The intention of EQF-Sports is to develop
“building blocks” related to the implementation of the Copenhagen/EQF process in
the sport sector. The objectives are: 1) The development of a methodology and
tools to provide “better understanding, transparency and mutual trust” between
the qualification systems, frameworks and authorities active in the sports
sector; 2) The development of a methodology and tools to achieve “credit
transfer and accumulation”, including “unitisation” and “modularisation” of
learning outcomes, the assessment process and the allocation of credit points;
3) The development of a methodology and tools for a coordinated approach to the
quality validation of formal and non formal learning.
Further information about the project
can be downloaded
here (project
flyer) and is also posted on
the EOSE website at

EQFOA is a two years project (Oct 2006 to Oct
2008) supported by Leonardo DaVinci fund that aims to provide a transparent,
comparable and transferable structure of competences and skills in the Outdoor
Leisure Sector. In order to define standards for this fast growing industry, an
Occupational Map for the Outdoor Sector across Europe will be developed which
will allow to identify specific jobs and functions within this area. The
information gained will eventually be used to produce a Competence Framework
consisting of technical and non technical competences. The framework will then
allow organisations, providers and universities to design or adapt training
programmes/systems. Thus the project will contribute to match the employees
requirements and employers qualifications related to the Outdoor Sector.
Skills Active UK and SNEPSALPA are coordinating the project.

The
Thematic Network Project AEHESIS was
developed in 2002. One year later in autumn, the Socrates Programme of the
European Commission started funding the
four year
project (2003 - 2007). In this regard
the AEHESIS Project has especially paid attention to the Bologna Process
as well as to the methodologies and results of the
Tuning Project implemented
by the European Commission.
The project is
co-ordinated by the
Institute of European Sport
Development & Leisure Studies at the German
Sport University Cologne on behalf of the European Network of Sport Science,
Education and Employment. The objective of the
AEHESIS Thematic Network Project is 'Aligning a European Higher
Educational Structure In Sport Science' by focusing
on two major aspects: Firstly to integrate programmes and time frames of
educational structures – and, secondly, to ensure that the identified structures
relate to the needs of the labour market in the four main areas
Sport Management, Physical Education,
Health & Fitness and Sport Coaching.
Concrete benefit and output
through the AEHESIS project
will be the use of the best
practice curriculum model designed individually for each designated sport
science area and developed from the findings of the “AEHESIS Curriculum
Questionnaire” and the use of a
high quality database reflecting all programmes offered in the European sport
science sector based on the information collected via the “AEHESIS Institutional
Questionnaire”
Target groups regarding all outcomes are primarily sport science institutes,
sport organisations, students, teachers and policy makers at universities as
well as all institutions dealing with education and training in sport science.

EUROSSEN was a
two year project (October 2003 - December 2005) supported
by the Leonardo da Vinci fund with a view to develop a European Observatoire
supported by National and Regional Observatoires
for Sport Education and Employment. Promoting institution was
SPRITO UK, ENSSEE was a
partner institution.
The project's target, to build
and to develop a network of key research organisations across European countries
(EOSE), all of whom have an interest in developing research related to standards,
materials and methods in education and training for the Sports and Active
leisure industries. This project will support the Social Dialogue Network in the
Sports Sector to map the Sport and Active Leisure Market of Europe. It will
carry out research in three major areas which will be the size and scope of the
enterprises in the Labour Market, the size and scope of occupations within the
labour market and the relationship with the training provision serving both
facets of the Sport and Active Leisure Sector which will be interrogated by
identifying skills gaps and shortages.

VOCASPORT means dealing with "Vocational
Education and Training related to Sports in Europe: Situation, Trends and
Perpectives" and was therefore a project focusing on the relation between
vocational training and employment in sports across Europe, funded by the
European
Commission. The VOCASPORT project ran for seven months from 01 January 2004
until 31 July 2004.
The project was managed by a consortium of EZUS-Lyon1, beneficiary of the
project and responsible for the finances and administration, the
European Observatoire of Sport and
Employment (EOSE) and the European Network for Sport Sciences, Education &
Employment (ENSSEE).
The vision of VOCASPORT was to understand the trends and the gaps of current
vocational training practices in the sport sector in the 25 EU and candidate
countries, to analyse their relations with broader national policies and
especially to test the degree of implementation of the EU principles set in the
“Copenhagen Declaration” at the national sectoral level.
